ASO audit for your app or game
I go through your store listing top to bottom and tell you what's holding your downloads back, what your competitors are doing and how far you can go. Hardly anyone uses everything Apple and Google already offer.
Start with a free mini audit of your store listing: no strings attached, no cost.
Who it's for
- Indie developers with a live app that isn't getting the downloads they hoped for, and who don't know where to start.
- Mid-sized studios whose organic downloads have plateaued and who want to know what's holding them back before investing more.
- Companies about to invest in ASO, whether through an outsourced ASO manager or an in-house team, that want a clear baseline first.
What an ASO audit solves: knowing exactly what's wrong with your listing and what to change first, instead of changing things blindly. I always start from the same idea: hardly anyone makes full use of what Apple and Google already put at their disposal.
What's included
I review your listing in this order:
- Listing and metadata. What's missing, and whether you're using every available character in the title, subtitle, keyword field and description.
- Icon. How it looks next to the others in your category, and whether you've ever tested it.
- Screenshots. Whether they really show your product or are generic, what they're failing to show and whether they carry keywords.
- App preview (video). Whether you have one and what it shows of your app.
- In-App Events and organic Custom Product Pages. Whether you use them and where you could.
- Markets and languages. Where you're optimised today and how many more markets you could optimise for or launch in.
- Competitors, above all. What they do, what works on their listings and what we can replicate on yours.
From there, I tell you how far we can go and what I'd do first.
How it's delivered: as a slide deck with the full summary or on a call, whichever you prefer. It takes at least a week.
The mistakes I see most
- Missing keywords and unused characters.
- Very basic screenshots.
- No In-App Events.
- No organic Custom Product Pages for specific searches where CTR could improve.
- The icon is never tested: teams keep the one they liked at the start, when you should always be testing for more CTR.
- Crashes and ANRs that hurt organic rankings.
- Bad reviews left unanswered and unresolved, and low ratings.
The experience behind it
I've spent around 7 years in ASO, and every project starts the same way: understanding the product and reviewing the listing. A few examples of what comes out of a good review:
- Markets and languages. When I joined CoinMarketCap, the app wasn't optimised for any country. We expanded it into global markets, working down from tier 1 to tier 4 countries, to win impressions.
- Icon. On Redvel Games' Soccer Star 2018 World Legend, an icon adapted to the month of Ramadan gave us +30% downloads.
- Screenshots. On a social casino app, new screenshots lifted conversion by 3%.
- Competitors. At Atalana Games we passed a million organic downloads with idle games by ranking for the biggest competitor's generic long-tail searches.
How we work, in 4 steps
- Free mini audit. If your app is already live, I start with a quick review of your listing and tell you what I'd change first. No commitment.
- Proposal. I send you a proposal with a fixed-price foundation and optional monthly management to apply and measure the changes.
- Paid upfront, no lock-in. You pay before we start and can stop whenever you want.
- Work and measurement. I deliver the audit and, if we carry on, apply the changes and measure the results every month.
Frequently asked questions
- What is an ASO audit?
- A full review of your app's listing on the App Store and Google Play: metadata, icon, screenshots, video, In-App Events, Custom Product Pages, markets and languages, ratings and competitors. You come away with a prioritised list of what to change and how far your app can go.
- How is the free mini audit different from the full ASO audit?
- In the mini audit I review your listing and tell you what I would change first. The full audit goes through every part of the listing, digs into your competitors and ends with a plan of what to do and in which order.
- How long does an ASO audit take?
- At least a week. I need that time to review every part of the listing properly and, above all, your competitors.
- How do you deliver the audit?
- As a slide deck with the full summary, or on a call where I walk you through it, whichever you prefer.
- What are the most common app store listing mistakes?
- Not using every character or keyword available, very basic screenshots, no In-App Events, no organic Custom Product Pages, never testing the icon, unresolved crashes and ANRs, and bad reviews left unanswered.
- What happens after the audit?
- You can make the changes yourself with the plan I give you, or I can do it: I propose a fixed-price foundation and, if you want, monthly management, paid upfront with no lock-in.
