ASO localization: your app in every language, with its own keywords
Translating a listing isn't localising it. I localise everything, metadata, screenshots and icon, per market, with keywords researched in each language rather than translated from English.
Start with a free mini audit of your store listing: no strings attached, no cost.
Who it's for
- Indie developers whose app works in its home language and who want to try more markets without translation mistakes.
- Game studios launching worldwide that need the listing to make sense in every country.
- Companies already in several markets, but with a translated rather than localised listing, that don't rank outside their main one.
The problem I solve: a word-for-word translated listing doesn't rank for what people search for in each country, and sometimes it doesn't even make sense. Every poorly localised market is impressions and downloads you're leaving behind.
What's included
- Full localisation per market: metadata, screenshots and icon. Always all of it, not just the text.
- Native keyword research in every language. In Latin-based languages and the ones I speak, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, English and German, I do it myself.
- More complex languages: I use AI to find the words people really use in each country, and analyse the keywords competitors rank for in each market.
- Cultural localisation: adapting icon and screenshots to each market's dates and references.
- Language-by-language review with AI, translators and ASO tools before anything goes live.
- Market prioritisation: where you are today, how many more markets you could be in and which to start with.
The experience behind it
- A Ramadan icon on Soccer Star 2018 World Legend (Redvel Games): +30% downloads. During the month of Ramadan we swapped the icon for one featuring Salah and a Ramadan crescent moon. Pure cultural localisation: the same game, adapted to what that market was living through.
- Redvel Games, localised down to the last country. We did analysis and keyword research even in Chinese.
- Atalana Games: over 1M organic downloads. With our idle games, localisation was, alongside keywords, one of the two big levers that took us past a million organic downloads in the middle of the genre's boom.
- CoinMarketCap: from tier 1 to tier 4. The app wasn't optimised for any country. We expanded it into global markets, working down from tier 1 to tier 4 countries, to win impressions.
- Ferro, my iOS app, in 30 languages. I launched it trawler-style, casting the net as wide as possible to see where it worked. Reviewing the screenshot text, I found machine translation failing systematically: "lift" as an elevator, "PR" (personal record) as public relations, and "track" carrying surveillance connotations in some languages. Since then I never publish a localisation without checking it language by language, especially in priority markets.
How we work, in 4 steps
- Free mini audit. If your app is already live, I review your listing and the languages it's in, and tell you what I'd change first. No commitment.
- Proposal. A fixed-price foundation with your priority markets localised, plus optional monthly management to keep adding and optimising languages.
- Paid upfront, no lock-in. You pay before each phase starts and can stop whenever you want.
- Work and measurement. I localise, publish and measure impressions, downloads and conversion per market to decide where to go next.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between translating and localising a listing?
- Translating moves text from one language to another. Localising adapts the listing to each market: finding the keywords people actually use in that country and adapting screenshots and icon to its culture and key dates.
- What should be localised in an app store listing?
- Everything: metadata, screenshots and icon per market. If you only translate the text and leave screenshots in English, the listing is far less convincing.
- Is it enough to translate my English keywords?
- No. I do my own keyword research in each language and analyse which keywords competitors rank for in each market. The translated word is often not the one people search for.
- Can I localise with machine translation or AI?
- As a tool, yes; to publish unreviewed, no. When I launched Ferro in 30 languages, machine translation turned 'lift' into an elevator and 'PR' into public relations. I review every language with AI, translators and ASO tools.
- How many languages should I launch my app in?
- It depends on the app. One option is to launch in many markets to see where it works, as I did with Ferro in 30 languages. At CoinMarketCap we expanded the app from tier 1 down to tier 4 countries to win impressions.
- How much does app store localization cost?
- I do not publish prices: it depends on the number of languages, the stores and how much needs adapting. After the free mini audit I send you a proposal with a fixed-price foundation and optional monthly management.
