App Store optimization expert and iOS ASO consultant
On the App Store every character counts, and the tools Apple keeps adding, such as organic Custom Product Pages and In-App Events, are among the things that move downloads most today. Hardly anyone uses them to the full.
Start with a free mini audit of your store listing: no strings attached, no cost.
Who it's for
- Indie iOS developers who have launched and don't show up in App Store search.
- Mid-sized studios with iOS apps or games that want to get the most from Custom Product Pages and In-App Events.
- Companies with an App Store app that works, but a listing nobody has optimised in a long time.
The problem I solve: the App Store gives you very little room for keywords, and any mistake, like repeating a word across two fields, costs you visibility. And most listings don't use the tools Apple already offers to win searches and bring users back.
What's included
- iOS keyword strategy: the main keyword always in the title, and title, subtitle and keyword field with no word repeated between them.
- Creatives: icon, screenshots and app preview.
- Product Page Optimization: icon, screenshot and video tests.
- Organic Custom Product Pages for long-tail or very specific searches.
- An In-App Events calendar: at least one a month, plus key dates.
- Monthly tracking of impressions, downloads from search and from browse, conversion and keyword rankings.
What Apple says (and how I use it)
- Limits: app name up to 30 characters, subtitle up to 30, keyword field up to 100 bytes (App Store Connect Help, version information). In Latin-script languages, 100 bytes is roughly 100 characters, but in Chinese, Japanese or Korean far fewer fit. That's why ASO localization into those languages needs its own research: at Redvel Games we did keyword research even in Chinese.
- No repeats: Apple advises against repeating words already in your app name, subtitle or category (App Store search). It's a rule I always follow.
- Custom Product Pages: up to 70 additional versions of your product page, and you can assign them keywords so they appear in search results for those keywords (Apple Developer).
- Product Page Optimization: up to 3 treatments of icon, screenshots and app previews, for up to 90 days per test (Apple Developer).
- In-App Events: each event lasts up to 31 days and can be promoted up to 14 days before it starts. They appear on your product page, in search results and on the Today, Games and Apps tabs. In search, people who already have your app see the event card, while those who don't see your screenshots (Apple Developer).
The experience behind it
Organic Custom Product Pages on a social casino app. It's relatively new, and we're making heavy use of it for long-tail or very specific searches, such as Caesars-style slots or Las Vegas or Roman-themed games: CPPs with screenshots in that theme and copy that invites people to download. Conversion and download results have been very good.
In-App Events every month. I launch at least one a month with the new slot games, plus key dates: Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, Halloween and the Fourth of July. They work brilliantly for winning back lapsed users. In a Christmas campaign on a social casino app in the US, the event passed 200,000 impressions in a month, and more than 99% of interactions were opens and re-downloads from existing users.
And before that: ASO Manager for the CoinMarketCap app at Binance, ASO consulting for App Radar's largest accounts, and ASO, In-App Events and new screenshots for FlipaClip, an app with tens of millions of downloads.
How we work, in 4 steps
- Free mini audit. If your app is already live, I review your App Store listing and tell you what I'd change first. No commitment.
- Proposal. A fixed-price foundation that gets keywords, listing and creatives in shape, plus optional monthly management for tests, CPPs and events.
- Paid upfront, no lock-in. You pay before each phase starts and can stop whenever you want.
- Work and measurement. I make the changes and measure every month. On the App Store, results take at least a month and a half to show.
Frequently asked questions
- How should keywords be split across App Store fields?
- The main keyword, the category term or the one you must rank for, always goes in the title. And keywords are never repeated across title, subtitle and keyword field. Apple says so in its search guidance: do not repeat words already in your app name, subtitle or category.
- What are the App Store title, subtitle and keyword limits?
- According to App Store Connect, the app name can be up to 30 characters, the subtitle up to 30 and the keyword field up to 100 bytes.
- What are organic Custom Product Pages?
- Alternative versions of your product page, up to 70 according to Apple, which you can now assign keywords to so they appear in search results for those keywords instead of your default page. They work for very specific searches where a tailored page converts better.
- Do In-App Events bring in downloads?
- Mostly they bring back lapsed users: people who had the app and stopped using it, or deleted it. In one Christmas campaign, more than 99% of interactions came from existing users.
- How long does App Store ASO take to show results?
- A month and a half at the very least. That is why I measure monthly rather than weekly.
- How much does an iOS ASO consultant cost?
- I do not publish prices: it depends on the app, the languages and whether we also work on Google Play. After the free mini audit I send you a proposal with a fixed-price foundation and optional monthly management.
